3 Common Faults With The Volkswagen Golf R's MK7.5
During our period of owning over 100 Golf MK7.5s here at MCS, we experienced and learnt about these cars' common traits and failures. From experience, the mk7.5 Volkswagen Golf R is a very reliable car when kept up to date with its maintenance. However, most people are unaware of these cars' services, such as a normal yearly oil change, Haldex service, and gearbox service. The following are three very important procedures the car must have to maintain and extend the vehicle's life. Not to mention your normal filters and regular spark plug changes.
Thermostat housing
The water pump and thermostat housing are one unit on the MK7.5’s. This part is made of plastic and sits very close to hot engine components. Over time, the mechanical parts surrounding the thermostat become very hot. This creates a heat cycle of hot and cold. This forces the plastic to expand when it's hot and contract when it cools. Eventually, the thermostat plastic housing will crack or warp over time. There is no advised mileage of when this happens. Studies show this occurs both at low, middle, and high mileage. It is important to always check your coolant levels every few months or after a long trip. Noticing any early signs of coolant loss could help prevent further, more costly issues.
As you are all wondering, how much will this repair set you back? Well, you will be happy to know that if you purchased this car new, the likelihood of it being covered under Volkswagen’s warranty is very high. Most extensive warranties would have this covered if you purchased the car from a trusted independent used car dealer. However, if you are unfortunately out of your warranty period, you will be looking at around £300/400 in parts plus 4-5 hours of labour. Whether you choose a main dealer, an independent garage, or a specialist to complete the work, most owners have this job done by a repeatable Volkswagen specialist to save half the labour cost.
Bonnet latch, cable & handle
Whether it’s the bonnet latch, cable, or interior handle, these 3 components are all on the possible list of failure. If your interior bonnet handle becomes stiff or the bonnet fails to close with normal force, these are two signs that these components are on their way out. You will be set from as little as approximately £30 for a used cable or £40 for a new aftermarket latch and hours of labour.
Always remember that if you cannot open your bonnet, make sure to regularly use the car to ensure the vehicle's battery is charged. Worst-case example, if your battery became flat, you would have trouble jump-starting your car without a mechanic on standby!
Haldex
Volkswagen recommends the Haldex oil change/service be carried out every 3 years for the best results of preventative maintenance on your vehicle. The Haldex pump provides oil pressure that actuates the clutches to bring the rear-drive into place when the car needs it. Failure to service your Haldex system will cause premature wear internally. The cost of a Haldex service varies depending on whether you choose an independent or a main dealer. Usually, you will be around the £99+vat area for the full job and parts.
Failure to service your Haldex will result in reduced traction on your drive system and usually ends up with a clogged or gunky Haldex. Servicing is preventative maintenance. Avoid leaving these jobs till the last minute.
The Golf is still a great example of an affordable hatchback that appeals to numerous motorists, whether they are looking for their first car or a family car. In June 2022, the Volkswagen Golf was one of the top five best-selling cars, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Regarding used car sales, the SMMT recorded that the Golf was one of the top three models sold in the first quarter of this year. So it’s clear that this car will continue to be a firm favourite for drivers, and yes, there are faults to be mindful of. However, with regular service, you can prevent serious damage.
