Hot Hatches
MCS Performance specialises in enhanced performance vehicles and we stock a wide variety of high-spec used cars in Colchester from streamlined sports cars to rapid hot hatches. The term 'hot hatch' refers to a hatchback model (defined as a car with a rear door that is hinged at the roof, swinging upward to provide boot access) which is enhanced for sports performance.
Hot hatches can either be upgraded versions of standard hatchback models, or lone-standing performance-orientated models. Upgrades that are characteristic of hot hatches generally revolve around handling and engine power. They also often have added interior and exterior touches such as sports lining, larger alloys, and more dynamic styling.
The title of the original hot hatch is most commonly attributed to the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which debuted in 1975 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, appearing on the British market a couple of years later. It featured a more powerful fuel-injected engine, firmer suspension and sporty tweaks to the interior styling. The abbreviation after the model name is a good way of identifying performance-focused hatches. In the Golf's case, the GTI stands for Grand Tourer Injection. You may also encounter ST (Sports Technologies), RS (Racing Sport), TSI (Turbo Stratified Injection), and TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection).
To this day, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is a frontrunner in the hot hatch class, although it now faces tough competition from the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST, the Ford Focus ST, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, the Renault Sport Megane RS, the Hyundai i30N and many more.
Some hot hatches have exceeded the performance expectations of their class and many industry critics term these 'super hatches'. This term is reserved for hatchbacks which achieve a level of performance almost on par with that of a supercar. An example of this would be the Audi RS3, which claims to be capable of achieving 0 to 60mph in a rapid 4 seconds.
